Your data platform is not a storage project.
The platform earns its cost when trusted data changes a decision quickly—not when another petabyte reaches the lake.
Storage is visible, countable, and easy to procure. Decision quality is harder. That is why platform programs often celebrate ingestion while analysts still reconcile definitions in spreadsheets and product teams wait weeks for a trustworthy answer.
Start with the decision contract
Name the user, the decision, the freshness required, the acceptable uncertainty, and what happens when data is missing. This contract determines whether the right product is a dashboard, event stream, model feature, operational API, or no new platform work at all.
Federate ownership, centralize leverage
Domain teams should own meaning and quality. A platform team should own reusable ingestion, discovery, lineage, access control, and observability. Centralizing every dataset creates a queue; decentralizing every tool creates fragmentation.
Storage project vs. decision platform
Sources onboarded
Petabytes stored
Pipelines built
Decisions improved
Time to trustworthy answer
Active data consumers
Key takeaway
- 01
Fund data products around consumers and decisions.
- 02
Give quality and meaning explicit owners.
- 03
Measure active trusted use, not storage growth.
