Measure what your team can do next.

Delivery metrics describe the work that passed. Capability metrics reveal whether the organization is becoming more able, resilient, and independent.

Team capability expanding after product delivery

Culture / VOL. 09

A project can launch on time and still leave the organization weaker: dependent on a vendor, afraid to change the system, unable to explain key decisions, or missing the feedback needed to improve. Output is necessary. It is not the full outcome.

Measure decision independence

Can the team diagnose a production issue, evaluate a design trade-off, change a model prompt, update a pipeline, or revise the roadmap without waiting for the original experts? Track which decisions moved into the team and the evidence they use to make them.

Look for reusable evidence

Documentation volume is not the goal. Useful evidence includes a decision record with its trade-offs, an observable service, a tested recovery playbook, a research pattern, or a team member who can coach others. Measure whether someone uses it in the next decision.

The 60-second version

  1. 01

Measure what the team can decide independently.

  2. 02

Test recovery and change, not documentation volume.

  3. 03

Track reused patterns and new mentors.

  4. 04

    Define project success beyond launch.
